What does the concept mean?
What does flexible work schedule mean? To put it simply, this is the employee’s opportunity to determine for himself a time convenient for performing his immediate work duties.
The employee must be present at his workplace at the agreed time or provide a completed plan within certain standard hours. But all this must be discussed with the manager directly either during employment or in the process of performing job duties.
This procedure can be applied in the modern labor market if most of the production process is carried out around the clock. The designation of the concept, as well as its varieties, have a clear definition, which is fixed in the Labor Code of the Russian Federation. Article 102 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation specifies the conditions of application, and the same is verified in the employment contract during employment.
Sliding
What is a rolling schedule and how can it be used? In Soviet times, similar conditions were provided for women who had small children, but today a sliding work schedule is used in many modern organizations. It is worth noting that it is installed not only for a specific employee, but also for an entire department, if this does not harm the production process. In addition, a prerequisite is the development of standard hours specified by law.
Shift
This type is often used in enterprises with a 24-hour production process. An example could be 3 shifts of 8 hours each, but at the same time, the designated production plans are fulfilled within certain standard hours.
Each shift fulfills its own plan, established by production needs. Thus, the work process does not stop and the company, accordingly, does not suffer losses. But with a flexible schedule, the shift should not exceed 42 hours per week.
Free
This is one of the most desirable options, but is used very rarely, only for certain types of professions that require freedom of action and movement, and not the narrow confines of the production process. Basically, people in creative professions who require inspiration can a flexible work schedule
Peculiarities
A work schedule of this type allows the employee to independently organize his working time, but he must necessarily work a set number of hours, as in a full day.
Attention! An employee with a flexible schedule, like all team members, has the right to a break for rest and lunch, as well as vacation time.
In addition, such loyalty has its own characteristics:
- The employee is required to be present at his workplace at a certain time, for example, to attend planning meetings or meetings.
- The employee has the right to decide for himself what period of time will be allocated for lunch and rest.
- It is possible to complete the work plan within a certain time set by the manager.
- In cases of failure to comply with the established plan, the employer has every right to impose penalties on the subordinate.
- If the employee was not present at a fixed time or did not work his standard hours, then this also faces penalties.
- If it is planned to transfer the entire department or division to a floating work schedule at the initiative of the administration, then the manager must inform the staff about this at least two months in advance.
Point of view
Natalya Volodina, HR Director at Moscow Nut Happyland: “I regard a flexible schedule as a very effective management resource, since it gives the employee a sense of certain autonomy. One of its forms - free mode - is regarded as a kind of bonus, a credit of trust. And, of course, this privilege applies to a greater extent not to ordinary employees, but to the management of the company. However, freedom is also a test of strength and professionalism. In this case, the manager expects even greater achievements from the subordinate. Such trust must be justified, and this will require even greater concentration of efforts from the employee.
Advantages and disadvantages
For every employer, the following are important: compliance with labor laws, the effective functioning of their enterprise or organization, and making a profit. But it is also important to take into account the interests of your employees to ensure productive activities. A manager can provide flexible working hours in an employment contract to his employees if this allows them to perform their duties with maximum efficiency for the sake of prosperity. Such a loyal mode of operation has its advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages include:
- managing working time at your own discretion, for example, working out the required standard hours in one week, and having more free time in another;
- when the specified number of hours is worked, the employee receives wages in full;
- the employee has the same rights as other employees;
- increasing the efficiency of the work process;
- the possibility of combining study or another type of activity, but not to the detriment of main employment;
- attracting qualified personnel who could not be used under other circumstances.
The manager has the right to provide a flexible work schedule in the employment contract
. Disadvantages:
- the difficulty of coordinating the work process and interaction between colleagues, since they can work at different times;
- there is a possibility that the position will be transferred to the part-time category, and this, in turn, may affect wages;
- there is a possibility of deterioration in the quality of the labor process due to violation of discipline in the team;
- the emergence of conflicts, the complication of relationships between employees.

Application
A flexible work schedule can be established in almost any enterprise. If we take practice, then this method is allowed when it does not affect the production process and does not become an obstacle to violation of discipline in the team. Today, in most cases, this daily routine can be used by:
- qualified specialists (part-time);
- remote nature of employment, and communication with superiors and colleagues is carried out via the Internet, telephone, fax;
- pregnant women and those women caring for small children;
- citizens whose family has a disabled child;
- students combining work and study.
But all these aspects must be discussed with the manager, even if it is just a temporary need.
Flexible working hours should not have a negative impact on the performance of job duties. The manager can make concessions if the production process or the circumstances specified in the law allow it. The law states that a person applying for a job must be at the workplace for a fixed number of hours. Based on this, wages are set.
A free work schedule has its own conditions:
- An employee can come and perform his immediate duties a few hours earlier, but he must also leave the same number of hours earlier.
- As for recording arrival and departure, it all depends on the organization where the person works. If there is no automatic control, then timesheets or other methods are allowed that will allow you to keep track of time worked.
An employee can come and perform his duties a few hours earlier or later

Drawing up an employment contract
This provision is regulated by the Labor Code, namely Article 102. In addition, such a right must be reflected in the employment contract and agreed upon with the employee during the interview, as well as after such a need arises. But here it is worth considering one circumstance.
Sample employment contract
If there is a need to change an employee’s schedule, you will need:
- discuss the issue directly with the manager and explain the reasons for this decision;
- if the employer agrees to change the labor regime, he is obliged to issue an order;
- Based on the order, an additional labor agreement is drawn up indicating changes in the employee’s schedule, which must indicate the moment at which the designated provision comes into force (the beginning and end of the working day, as well as its duration).
It is important to know! The agreement between the manager and the employee must be mutual.
The employer does not have the right to refuse if this is permissible at the designated enterprise or organization, and also does not have the right to independently change the regime. The employee must give his written consent.
This clause must be reflected in the employment contract. After agreeing on all the nuances, the employer issues an order indicating the changes and stipulating a time convenient for both parties.
Shift work
Contrary to prevailing stereotypes, shift work exists not only in shopping centers, call centers and customer services. Employees of large publishing houses, news agencies, full-cycle advertising agencies, construction organizations, etc. work in this mode.
It would seem that what is “flexible” in such a schedule? After all, the duration of the shift is strictly fixed. However, many companies are loyal to the fact that employees working in this mode change shifts depending on personal circumstances - this allows them to completely free a certain day or part of the day. Sometimes the shift schedule is combined with a sliding schedule: say, with a standard nine-hour shift, an employee (in agreement with the manager) works six hours on one day and twelve on another.
